Wondering how to make your Christmas a really special time of the year? Volunteering your time, talents or making a  small monetary donation could help someone less fortunate, as well as bring the joy of Christmas to you. There are several programs in the San Diego area to consider.

1. San Diego’s Toys for Tots program involves the collection and then distribution of  toys to underprivileged children in our community. Take part this holiday season and drop off a toy or two at one of San Diego’s local Toys for Tots drop off points. If you don’t have time this busy holiday season, there is always a chance for you to donate on line. Toys for Tots will make sure your donation provides a gift for a child in need.

2. SAY San Diego (Social Advocates for Youth) is organizing a holiday gift drive to support hundreds of low-income families. You can help a family in need over the holiday season by donating something on their wish list. Families provide a wish list with items ranging from household items to warm jackets for the kids. This is a great way to personally get involved and make a families holiday season special. If you are interested in participating in this program, email adoptafamily@saysandiego.org.

3. The Ronald McDonald House is always looking for volunteers to help with family meals and other activities. Mealtime is a very important time for the families, after they have spent all day in the hospital. It is a time for families to go to the House and enjoy quality time together. It takes lots of efforts and many volunteers to make the House run smoothly every day. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please call (858) 467-4750. You can volunteer during the holiday season, or any time thereafter.

4. Believers of all ages are invited to their local Macy’s store to drop off letters to Santa. Children can write and send their very own letters to Santa. For each letter received, Macy’s donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Seventy-five percent of all the donations stay in the San Diego area, benefiting local children in need. What a great way for everyone, young and old, to get a chance to help a child’s life.

5. One more opportunity to make a difference is to support the San Diego Food Bank at their Holiday Food Drive to provide food for those less fortunate this holiday season. You can participate by dropping off non-perishable food items in their famous red barrels at Vons and Starter Bros. supermarkets. All the food donated will be distributed to people in need through 350 partner charities. This is a simple way to make a big impact on someone’s life.

The Holidays are officially here and San Diego has so much to offer to get you in the spirit!  Lynsey put together some of our favorite holiday activities around town.

Grooms Advice {dot} com had Michael Andrews guest blogging on the top 5 men’s wedding attire trends for 2011. Michael is Founder and CEO of Michael Andrews Bespoke – New York’s Designer Custom Tailor that crafts high-end yet affordable menswear with a modern flair.

Michael Andrew Bespoke’s Top Five Groom’s Attire Trends for 2011

1. For formal weddings, we are seeing a real trend toward slim fit one-button midnight blue tuxedo with peak lapels.  Dark blue looks richer under evening light and provides a better contrast against the black satin on the lapels.  When the jacket is cut trim through the waist, the peak lapels help accentuate the shoulders for a flattering silhouette.

2. We are also seeing a strong trend toward less formal weddings.  Roughly half of the wedding outfits we make are suits instead of tuxedos.  For destination weddings and daytime summer weddings, we see a lot of cotton and linen suits. For evening weddings, we are doing a lot of charcoal grey and midnight blue suits.

3. We are also seeing very few tuxedo shirts with traditional pleats or a bib front.  Most guys are opting for a more simple, updated style.  The most popular is a classic spread collar shirt made in a rich piqué fabric that gives the shirt a more luxurious and formal appearance. The hidden button front offers a clean, formal look and eliminates the need for tuxedo studs.

4. A return to the bowtie.  For the past few years, long black ties had eclipsed the traditional bowtie in popularity, but we have seen the bowtie come back strong this year.  Opt for an oversized velvet bowtie to make a statement.

5. The perfect groomsman gift: matching custom shirts and ties.  It gives a degree of consistency to the wedding party while still being personalized to each groomsman.

Thank you Michael Andrews and Grooms Advice{dot}com!

Smitten is getting sassy this week…  The lovely ladies of Boudoir Divas spent some time telling us more about what they do and why they love it.  Now, who couldn’t be smitten with that?

What is your favorite part of the industry?

“Making women feel drop dead gorgeous. We absolutely love seeing their reactions when we show them their photos for the first time!”

If you weren’t in the event industry, what would you be doing?

“Hmmmm….. tough one. I would probably be a teacher or work at a ranch. I love kids and animals. In that order of course.”

Where do you draw your inspiration?  Are their specific resources?

“W Magazine is probably our biggest source of inspiration. We also love traveling, that seems to spark our creativity like nothing else. We are pretty addicted to going to Paris. Our next boudoir photography workshop will be held in a villa in Jamaica and we are going to mesh those two influences. Couture meets Sport Illustrated!”

What is one piece of advice you would give a bride?

“First we would  say just knowing that things aren’t going to be perfect on the big day, but it is more about embracing this celebration by having fun with friends and family and letting the little things slide. Next, we might be biased, but a super sexy groom’s gift!!! Imagine how excited he would be if he opened an album with sexy, classy, gorgeous photos of you just hours before he says “I do!”

What are some of the trends you see for 2010 and 2011?

“We are crazy about vintage couture details! Maybe broaches in the hair, or a vintage garter, or if it’s a winter wedding swap out the bouquet for a vintage muff (hand warmer). I love watching old Marilyn Monroe movies for ideas.”

Thank you for sharing ladies!

Happy Weekending Everyone…

Thank you Roldan Productions for putting this clip together of Kari and Randy’s wedding…

I have to pay a little homage to my New England roots especially as the season turns to autumn.  The weather is cooler and it is time to go to the orchid to find a little inspiration.

As an FYI, the orchids are open for picking…

Mountain Farms…Gastil Orchard

Peacefield Orchard

Raven Hill Orchard

How do you like them apples?

Dear Miss O, we love your magazine here at LBE and we are excited to share your picks for new fall fragrances.  Warm and intoxicating, these bouquets are sure to please…

Friday Five- Fragrance of Fall

1. Jo Malone- This fragrance was inspired by the John Keats poem, “To Autumn.”  For those Jo Malone perfume disciples who favour the fruity and sensual scent of Pomegranate Noir, this new cologne might strike a similar note of pleasure and could be considered by many as one of the best new fragrances of 2010.

2. Play For Her- Talk about brilliant packaging…  Play for Her is a surprising and bold fragrance that radiates its unusual alchemy, combining the floral notes of the tiare flower and the warm accords of amyris wood to create a voluptuously flowered fragrance with woody tones. Imagining a woman who is naturally seductive and ready for life’s surprises, Givenchy’s perfumers created this sparkling composition to astonish and captivate.

3. Miss Pucci- Youthful, fresh, and seductive, miss Pucci is undeniably modern while opening a window to the retro Pucci lifestyle of vibrant color, perpetual motion, and sun-soaked destinations. The perfume rests on a magnolia and rose accord and is described as a sparkling musky-floral.

4. Bliss- The fragrant composition is developed by Cecile Hua, promoting and providing good mood with a fresh mixture of bright bergamot, dewy cucumber and vivid flowers, such as lilies, violet and ylang-ylang. This unique blend is light enough to be your signature perfume that you wear on special occasions.

5. Twirl- It’s been eight years since Kate Spade’s first fragrance, Kate Spade.  Twirl is a younger and more playful scent full of fruity floral, sweet with mandarin, pink watermelon, white peach and red currant and blackberry at the top. Jasmine, magnolia, orange blossom and tiare are the heart; musk, amber and patisserie-inspired French macaron make up the base.

I was pleasantly surprised to have received images from Sandy and John’s Labor Day weekend wedding already!  Thanks so much to elle.g photography for getting them ready so quickly.

We will have a full pst ready in the near future.  For now, this is just a glimpse into this Tailored Texan Wedding at El Cortez!

Congratulations Sandy and John!

how green are you

Liz and I developed a very scientific method of measuring how green a person thinks they are in conjunction with the green wedding show last month and snapped photos throughout the day. We just got some of the snapshots in (thanks Jen!) and wanted to share.

What shade of green are you?

Celery : just getting started, you recycle most of the time

Honeydew Melon : usually recycle, sometimes eat organic and kind of know what’s eco-friendly

Green Grass : conscious of what’s eco-friendly and you try to do your part when it’s convenient

Granny Smith : a step up from green grass, you make an effort to be green in most aspects of your life

Spearmint Leaf : very eco-friendly with your diet and way of life, you probably compost, reduce, reuse, and recycle

Evergreen : super green, pretty much the most eco-friendly you can be with what’s available to you
