My favorite little red head, Hattie, turned the BIG TWO this past weekend and we all got to celebrate!  Miss Hattie is an independent and vivacious little firecracker that would choose to spend everyday picking flowers and playing in the backyard if she could.  There have been many times that I have arrived home to find little cups of wildflowers hand plucked and delivered by Hattie via the Radio Flyer.   When thinking about ways to celebrate her second birthday, there was no doubt that it had to be in the garden amidst all of her favorite things (flowers, dirt, trees, rocks, snails, etc…).

I was the amateur iPhone photographer for the day.  I tried but none of my tricks got her to look at the camera.

“Hattie’s Seed Company” packets adorned the backyard along with Burlap, Sunflowers, Wellies planted with succulents and all sorts of other goodies.  Hattie’s banner was a joint effort created with love!

All of the guests participated and brought something special to add to Hattie’s Garden Party.  Abby (Hattie’s NINE year old niece) amazed all of us with her chick cupcakes.  Yes, I did say that she is 9 years old and she made these.  I will be sure to share her information when she opens up her bakery!

Thanks to Cookies by Design, we all got to decorate flower cookies.

Hattie decorated her cookies and then made sure she shared them with everyone.

 Happy Birthday Hattie!!!

We are in love with Reem Acra’s interpretation of the traditional veil.  It is so sheer over the skin and skims the floor so eloquently.  All of this and it won’t stick to your lipstick or tangle in your eye lashes.  GENIUS!  For all of you ladies that want the length and drama of a veil without the actual hair accessory, this could be your answer.

Martha Stewart’s recent post asked what you would call it.  Some said a “Shoulder Veil” while others said “Cape Veil.”  I am leaning towards the Cape Veil because who does not want to feel like a super hero on their wedding day?  Whatever you call it, I love it!

As we cruise through spring, we are gearing up for the sunshine of summer and the wardrobe shift that we love so much.  Gentlemen, we are talking to you today.  As the summer months draw near, the hot weather is not far behind.  The thought of wearing a heavy tuxedo in 90 degree weather does not sound very comfortable to me at all…  Today we are sharing some tips from The Art of Manliness on how to most comfortably wear formal attire in the summer months.

A Guide to Summertime Formal Attire

Trousers- Tropical wools or high end cotton weaves should be the fabrics you look for in a good pair of summer dress trousers.

Dress Shirt- Most men know to select cotton, but few realize the fabric make-up is only a part of the equation for staying cool.  Search for weaves and weights that allow cotton to do what you want it to do – transmit the moisture and heat from your body right out to your surrounding environment.

Handkerchief – It’s not just for your nose, and the handkerchief does a much better job of cleaning off sweat than your shirt sleeve.

Stylish and Functional Hats- Panamas, Straw Fedoras, Tilleys, and Linen Caps are great options available and made from plant fibers and woven in a way that they can block light, retain their shape, and allow airflow.

We did a little window shopping at our beloved Mr. Porter to find a little summer time inspiration for our men.

Every year we look forward to the  The US Grant Wedding Showcase as an opportunity to not only design something fun, but to be inspired by all of the other brilliant designers.  For those of you that were able to attend, I am sure you will agree when I say that it was a treat for the senses.  Brides and Grooms were literally spoiled from the moment they walked into the luxurious US Grant Lobby and that was just the start.  The entire hotel was transformed with a unique experience around every corner. Bravo to the US Grant team for putting together such a spectacular event for attendees and exhibitors alike.

The Liz Beck Events Booth:

Rather than creating a heavily flowered wedding tablescape, we decided to create a mini version of the LBE studio complete with a lighthearted interpretation of wedding day essentials.  A mock-up of a table-scape was centered  among our cubbies of colorful “Day Of” items to complete the studio showcase .

When thinking about the overall design, I wanted something that could represent a bit of a playful sophisticate.  Bold with color while still keeping the clean lines.  There are no better muses of color (in my humble opinion) than Jonathan Adler (happiness!) with his mid-century modern interiors and Kate Spade (swoon!) with their witty sense of style.  Inspiration Found!

So, where does someone go when they have an outside of the box idea that calls for innovation and a great design aesthetic?  That would be LaVonne of Adorations Botanical Artistry.  She has an amazing ability to translate an idea into a work of art.  I mean, look at the bouquet created with the yellow billy balls (upper left);  it belongs at The Parker.  LaVonne created monochromatic bouquets to work into our color blocked vignettes.

The center table represented our modernist couple that wanted an alternative to the flowing linens and traditional floral centerpieces.  The white Bistro Table and clear ghost chairs certainly set the modern in motion.  Magenta, Tangerine, Butter and Gold brought life to the table. Velvet geometric upholstry was used to create the lamp shade that sat atop a clean line bulbous vase.  Tangerine chargers, Gold Flatware, Retro Stemware and a Patterned Gold Plate were placed at each setting.  The stunning gold textured menus from J.Grace and the vintage metal tags completed the table.

Are you wondering how those flowers are so perfectly set into the bottom?  That is a secret that LaVonne will have to share.  I will just say that I was impressed!

The color blocked backdrop was so much fun to put together.  Everything a Bride and Groom may need from their wedding planner could have been found…

There is no denying the fact that patterns have a permanent place in wedding design and decor.  Often times I find brides have a color palette of 3 or so “wedding colors” and it is our job to give them life!  I LOVE this part of the design process wherein we can incorporate those colors into a patterned textile, paper, accent decor or lighting.  The trick is finding the balance of material and application but that is where the fun begins!

As we approach autumn, we are seeing a lot of patterns carrying their weight through 2011 and into 2012.  I have outlined 2 of my personal favorites below.

Chevron: This BOLD pattern makes a really strong impact but it is all based on your selection of color.  Lighter colors offer more of a subtle texture versus the bold colors I have shown below.   A chevron is essentially a series of V’s laid out in a row. It’s a little bit wavy but with more of a hardened edge.  When in doubt, think Missoni whose iconic fashion is synonymous with colorful pattern and an array of chevron detailing.P

Polka Dots:  I just adore the sophisticated polka dot!  Like any pattern, the dot can be BOLD or subtle.  It is all about the application and color selection.  2011 was a banner year for the polk dot and this trend will carry on through 2012.  From gowns, dresses and shoes to cake, stationery and flowers…  the dot is everywhere.  It can be just as timeless and classic as it can be whimsical and fun!If you are wanting to create a custom fabric to incorportate pattern into your event, check out Spoonflower.  They will create fabric based on your graphics.  Tomorrow (AUGUST 18, 2011), they are offering a free swatch for your custom fabric.  I can’t wait to place my orders!

It is a rare occasion that I get to be in New England for one of my niece’s or nephew’s birthday parties and I was so excited to have been able to celebrate with Preston James on his second birthday.  Preston LOVES the carousel so it was only fitting that we throw him and all of his two year old buddies a Birthday Carousel Carnival at the oldest Loof Carousel in the World!  I am certain that fact meant a lot to Preston…

While our birthday boy spent all of his time on the 90 mph carousel (at least that is what it felt like to me!) some of his friends enjoyed face painting and balloon animals.  After taking the quick course in face painting, I was on hand to create unicorns, cupcakes, clowns and dolphins on some sweet little faces.  Each of the kids got a carnival box full of animal crackers and carnival stickers, pinwheels and popcorn cupcakes.  The avid carousel riders took a break when the donut clown cake was served and the candles blown out!  Oh to be TWO!

It was a blast for Auntie Liz to be part of the party!

Happy Birthday Preston James!

I was completely inspired by the bright ruffled pillows I found at That Funky Boutique on Etsy.  Apparently, they have been doing their homework as these colors are some of the trend colors for 2012.  I did a little “window shopping” on Net-A-Porter and found the perfect sassy dresses that not only compliment my initial inspiration, but they also make a statement!

The vibrant colors and the style are all bold options but equally fun and sophisticated.  It is so wonderful that we can use color AND have something that your ladies will want to wear again.  Go ahead. add little personality, character and a POP to your day!

PS: Net-A-Porter is having an amazing sale and most of these designer gowns are on sale (surely your bridesmaids would appreciate that!).

Ahhh, the bouquet…  It is the signature accessory to every bride!

I spent the past week working with clients in determining the look of their bouquet and was feeling inspired to share some of my favorites from wedding’s past.   A bouquet is one of the few things, besides the gown, that can add personality to the overall bridal look.  Whether you choose vibrant colors or traditional white, there are numerous ways to make it your own.

Above: Flowers by Annette Gomez designed this beautiful bouquet of white peonies and succulents.

Below: Isari Flower Studio created this lush collection of blush roses and the bride’s textured white bouquet.

Above: Rae Florae combined these gorgeous Lady Slippers with accents of Dusty Miller!

Below: Twigg Botanicals perfectly blended the color and texture for this vintage inspired bouquet.

Above: Rae Florae composed this garden inspired bouquet for a private estate wedding.

Below: Organic Elements worked with vibrant color and paired the ladies with a signature bloom.

Below: Embellishmint Floral Design Studio  took the traditional rose bouquet and added an edge with the wrap and accents.

What would a Royal British Wedding be without the hats?  Kate and William’s guests did not disappoint with posh hats of all shapes and sizes.

Inspiration…  when planning your wedding, think about the dress code for your guests.  Maybe it is a hat, maybe a color but what a great way to have your guests set the tone and accent the decor!

Today, we pay tribute to the life of Elizabeth Taylor (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011).  Married 8 times to 7 men, Ms. Taylor was not a stranger to weddings.  She may not have found her one true love but she will forever be an icon in the bridal fashion world.

Marriage One: Conrad “Nicky” Hilton (6 May 1950 – 29 January 1951) (divorced)

From Love TripperHollywood tabloids had already breathlessly reported on the star’s four carat diamond engagement ring, and now thousands of fans flocked outside the church to catch a glimpse of the actress in her bridal attire. Elizabeth emerged from the limosine in a creation by MGM studio designer Helen Rose– a white satin confection embellished with seed pearls and beading which had taken a number of workers two months to complete. A sweetheart neckline was covered with a chiffon overlay to reveal just a hint of decolletage [cleavage!]. A three-quarter length veil was attached to a cap garnished with pearls combined with a pearl tiara. To complete the all-white motif, the bride carried a bouquet of white orchids.

Marriage Two: Michael Wilding (21 February 1952 – 26 January 1957) (divorced)

Elizabeth’s second trip down the aisle was not quite as traditional and far more subdued than the first go round.  Yet, she is just as stunning in her 3/4 length sleeves, low neckline, delicate gloves, pearl necklace  and a small spray of flowers.  In exchange for the veil, she has simple flowers in her hair still indicating that she is the bride!

Marriage Three: Michael Todd (2 February 1957 – 22 March 1958) (widowed)

Out of all of Elizabeth’s bridal looks, this one is my favorite.  Of course, I have SEARCHED high and low for the designer information and have yet to find it.  If anyone cares to share, please do so!

Liz married movie producer Mike Todd in February, 1957 in Acapulco only 3 days after her divorce from Michael Wilding. Todd was 24 years her senior, but Taylor acknowledges that of all her marriages, this, although tempestuous, was her happiest.  On 22 March 1958, Todd’s private plane, Lucky Liz, crashed near Grants, New Mexico. The marriage had lasted 418 days. (squidoo.com)

Marriage Four: Eddie Fisher (12 May 1959 – 6 March 1964) (divorced)

It wasn’t long before Elizabeth fell in love again, however, this time with entertainer Eddie Fisher. The pair were married just over a year after she became a widow. When it began the romance caused a scandal, as Eddie was wed to Singin’ In The Rain star Debbie Reynolds at the time, earning Elizabeth a reputation as a man-stealer. (Hello Magazine)

Elizabeth wore a sheer draped emerald green dress with cascading bouquet.

Marriage Five: Richard Burton (15 March 1964 – 26 June 1974) (divorced)

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton had a long, and somewhat torrid romance, which ended in divorce, not once but twice.  The wedding was just nine days after her marriage to Eddie Fisher ended.
For the first wedding, Elizabeth wore an empire-style chiffon gown in daffodil yellow for her wedding to Richard. She finished the look off with the emerald and diamond brooch presented to her by her husband. In her hair, the award-winning star wore lilies of the valley and white hyacinths.

Marriage Six: Richard Burton (10 October 1975 – 29 July 1976) (divorced)

The second marriage of Richard and Elizabeth took place on October 10, 1975 in the Chobe National Park in Kasane, Botswana, Africa. The officiant at their wedding was an African district Commissioner from the Tswana tribe.
Elizabeth wore green with lace frills and guinea fowl feathers, while her husband dressed in a red shirt, white trousers and red socks for the simple 20-minute ceremony held in the remote village of Kasane, Botswana.

Marriage Seven: John Warner (4 December 1976 – 7 November 1982) (divorced)

When they announced their wedding, the press mocked her, but friends (including his ex Barbara Walters) supported their union. Friends said he was dull, but just what she needed.  Apparently, being the wife of a public political figure. She was told to cut back on all the frank talk about her personal life, sexy dress, and ostentatious jewelry. At first she embraced the position, but eventually it became to restrictive to be the good, quiet wife of a politician. She cursed at photographers, drank, and spoke freely. (Blogger of the Bride)

I could not find a photograph from their wedding but I settled for this one.

Marriage Eight: Larry Fortensky (6 October 1991 – 31 October 1996) (divorced)

She met the construction worker while both were in rehab at Betty Ford and wed him despite skepticism that a love affair between a blue-collar guy and Hollywood royalty would last. It did — for several years. This was Taylor’s last try at wedded bliss.  She wore a custom Valentino gown for this 2 million dollar affair.  Michael Jackson walked her down the aisle at his Neverland Ranch.

RIP Dame Elizabeth Taylor
