Erica and Creed are both anesthesiologists with a passion for the coast and a love for the great outdoors.  When they aren’t in their scrubs (which is rare), they are immersed in some sort of activity or excursion.  When it came to their wedding, there was no doubt that they would select a location with an ocean view and they did just that.   It took one visit to La Valencia and they were decided.

I am excited to share the beautiful images of their day.  Thank you Jennifer Dery Photography!

Adorations Botanical Artistry worked with Erica and Creed to design the overall floral decor that worked in the yummy elements of succulents, driftwood, dahlias and roses.  There were many other intricate elements worked into every piece they designed.  LaVonne and her team truly captured the essence of the couple from the bouquets to the ceremony and the reception.

The ceremony aisle was lined with driftwood, blooms and stones leading up to an ornate botanical structure framing the couple.   Creed’s brother had his guitar on hand for a special song performed by a close friend.  It added such a great personal touch to the ceremony and even captured a few laughs!

Guests entered the ballroom to find their succulent escort card that also functioned as the guest favor as well as the entree indicator.  Table numbers were suspended from the table landscape and surrounded by candlelight.  I actually planted my succulent and it is happy and healthy in my backyard.

Erica and Creed wanted to treat their guests not only with a wedding cake, but also mini cupcakes.  Sweet Cheeks Baking Company provided all of the decadent desserts and Adorations designed the table.  We had a caricature artist on hand sketching black and white images of guests.  The reverse side of their caricature design functioned as the guest signing with personal questions about the bride and groom.  At the end of the evening, the newlyweds left with sketches of each of their guests along with their stories, advice and predictions.  It will be fun to read those five years from now!

Concepts Event Design created the custom seamless dance floor and Jerry Beck of Beck’s Entertainment kept everyone on it throughout the evening.

Thank you Erica and Creed for trusting LBE with your wedding day.  It was such a pleasure working with you and your families!

This week we are smitten with Jennifer Dery Photography.  Not only is Jen a brilliant photographer, but also a pretty fantastic person.  Check out her responses and learn a little more about why we are smitten with Jen Dery!

There are a lot of photographers out there, what makes you unique?

This is a hard one to communicate to a newly engaged couple.  They will be hit from every direction with photography and can get saturated with information quickly.  I think upon closer inspection however, couples will find that my uniqueness shows through.  It comes from my experience, my eye, my personality.   I’m a bit quirky and have a great eye for moments…. Funny, sad, odd, my photos may be pretty but they usually have some substance to them too.  There is nothing I hate more than dead expressions in a photo.  I’ll push to get personality and connection with my subjects whenever possible.

What is your favorite part of the industry?

Hearing the engagement stories!  It is amazing how often the Bride doesn’t want to get out of the car.  I love meeting new people and getting to hear all about their big plans for the wedding day too.  Their excitement is contagious and I guess as a photographer I’m often in a situation where I get to live vicariously through my couples.  It’s fun to see how their families grow later and I love it when I get to catch up with them and photograph their kids.

If you weren’t in the event industry, what would you be doing?

Wow, I’d probably be a food and/or travel photographer.  I travel a lot for my events and I’ve truly caught the travel bug.  I’m also a bit of a food and wine geek and love to study all those cooking magazines and imagine I was there doing the photography.  If I could get a gig covering food and travel in Italy I’d be in heaven.

Where do you draw your inspiration?  Are their specific resources?

Artistic inspiration is everywhere.  I once saw the best photo of my life on the side of the road but missed it because I was driving.  It still kills me.  There on the side of the freeway in the middle of the desert was a guy in a full-blown clown get up with spiked up fire engine red hair standing next to a red jeep.  All the red and the expression on his face was magic.  I may just have to recreate it someday.  Besides the side of the road; magazines, movies, friends, strangers, etc.  It’s all fair game and will be used against you.

What is one piece of advice you would give a bride?

Hire a coordinator.  And I’m not just saying that for LBE.  I think the best thing for a Bride is to be able to be a guest at her own wedding.  She can’t do that if she is answering all the behind the scene questions on the day of and worrying about the cake, flowers, parking and if Uncle Fred got his gluten free meal.  Be a guest, be surprised by the flowers, be amazed at the cake, have no clue what is next on the timeline because you are “present”.

What are some of the trends you see for 2011?

A little less DIY and a little more old Hollywood glamour with a big modern twist.  Long weekends with multiple events throughout but nothing stuffy or pretentious.  Lots of personal “branding” through the wedding.  And more and more couples seem to be seeing each other to do photos before the ceremony too.  I love that part.
